Lyngs Report post Posted July 19, 2012 My Amano shrimp did quite a performance today, so even if the plants still look like shit, and I only had the old digital camera at hand, I wanted to share a bit of the "dance".

I want one! So colorful and nice, brings so much contrast. Apistogramma agassizii. Got him at the local petstore, together with two females. Both have died from the damn worms tho and I am not sure I can get him new ones with the same colours unfortunately. I bought them right on the spot when I first saw them. Cost me almost
Naicha Report post Posted July 23, 2012 Have to prune the background plants once a week all the way to the ground. In a week they grow all the way up to cover half the surface. and then they dont get light down to the ground so the bottom leaves withers. So have to prune like a madman to keep them looking good. have been gone for a week now btw and when I got home there were lots of black wool kinda algae. Removed the most by hand but I can keep dosing EC now when I'm home and it'll probably go away. Happy sight though that some of the staurogyne has grown thick sideways now when they get more light hours. So hopefully they'll keep spreading out.
Naicha Report post Posted July 29, 2012 Algae explosion. Don't know why.. Have to check my values. I'm suspecting the Co2-system kinda stopped working... That would explain the algae shock. Lots of nutrition but no co2.. Hopefully it ISNT broken though cause its just not fun to fiddle around with..
Naicha Report post Posted August 5, 2012 Yup, definately got leak.. I'm gonna order those bolts you linked Lyngs and rebuild it all.. :< Could be leaking from the screw caps aswell, the cans arent really good quality. just old lemon containers.
Naicha Report post Posted August 8, 2012 Lyngs when you fitted the bulk heads, did you use something to seal with so it wont leak from the screws/bearings? If you use a simple coca cola plastic bottle, is it enough just to screw it together on the lid and it will be sealed?

If you use a simple coca cola plastic bottle, is it enough just to screw it together on the lid and it will be sealed? If there is rubber inside the cap it should be enough. That is what I have. Cocal cola bottles. Most of the discount soda dont have it and they seal fine without. The bulkheads themselves should be enough tho as they are made for hobby airplane fuel tanks and have to be able to seal tight. Still working on reshaping my 250L tank. Not quite sure what plants to add in the gaps yet and wont buy anything before after our holiday in 2½ weeks. My Daphnia cultures keep crashing. Probably because I add too much yeast/spirulina. Wont bother with it for a while, too little time atm.
Naicha Report post Posted August 8, 2012 I have probs aswell, got loads of green/grey wooly bushy algae but I think I know what causes disturbance. If you remeber in the middle I have a BTN background that goes to the top of the tank, that background gets slowly filled with water, in other words, it isnt completely sealed. This water doesnt move around and it gets alot of light so it turns yellowish which sips out in the rest of the aquarium causing a little oily layer on the surface. I think this might be polluting my water making algae appear. It also make all the water yellowish. It's ugly as fuck. And since its impossible to get it sealed properly when its all wet and ucky. I've thought of a solution that might work. If I take a thick plastic bag (those black ones that are very strong mosly) and put in the backgorund part (when half the aquarium is empty, in which case I can also empty this Background, or at least about 95% of it). Anyway, I put the back in so its water tight, then I fill it up to the edge with sand, this should pressure the plastic out to fill almost all the little cracks and edges in the background. Hopefully this will reduce the amount of water in the background by alooot, hopefully almost everything. like 95%++++. Then this could hopefully stop. Alot of text now but anywho. Lyngs Report post Posted August 8, 2012 The oily looking part might be protein, which is normal for any tank that doesnt have enough surface disturbance and maybe overfeeding. About the background, maybe you can fix it with Orca underwater glue. I keep one near my tank in case I get a leak: http://www.deepoceanshop.dk/aquarium-munster-orca-underwater -glue-450-g.html
Naicha Report post Posted August 8, 2012 Think that's what I glued it with in the first place? Aquarium silicon basically. Guess it's pretty much the same. I only feed 1 of those sinking algae-catfish-pills once every 4 days. Can't be too much can it?
Lyngs Report post Posted August 8, 2012 There is no silicone in this stuff. It hardens under water and doesnt harm fishies. You could try what you suggested but if you think it wont solve the problem 100% its not worth it IMO. How about your water surface, is there movement enough? 2-3mm waves at the far end of the tank opposite the pump should be enough. Overfeeding isnt required to get a film of protein on the surface but it "helps". Largest factor is insufficient surface movement.
Naicha Report post Posted August 8, 2012 I'll try increase it. The fishies can handle alittle stream! And if they don't care for it, they shouldn't be swimming in it. Thanks. And as I said before, plant growth has stopped cause co2system is broken. :<
Lyngs Report post Posted August 8, 2012 More flow isnt necessarily needed. If you can angle it a bit more towards the surface so it creates more movement from underneath, that should do the trick.
Naicha Report post Posted August 8, 2012 Not that easy to angle the flow cause of the BTN background. That shit looks good but it sure causes problems. Might even remove it when I move the tank later on and just plant the tank more and cover teh back with green forests and roots. Maybe an external filter is more awesome. Lyngs Report post Posted August 8, 2012 External filters are teh win!
Naicha Report post Posted August 8, 2012 Also, white sand was a big mistake.. It doesn't really stay white..... Dark sand probably waay better..
Naicha Report post Posted August 17, 2012 Just received the thingies. They might be a tad tad tad too small. The grip between the tube and the thingie isnt THAT good so might have to use something to seal abit. but anywho, they're probably going to be great.
Lyngs Report post Posted August 17, 2012 Naicha wrote on Fri, 17 August 2012 16:33 The grip between the tube and the thingie isnt THAT good... Yeah, they are designed to be held in place with small metal clamps, but a piece of tight string works just as well.
Naicha Report post Posted August 17, 2012 Its very close to enough though but better be sure.
Lyngs Report post Posted August 17, 2012 Mine didnt "pop" off untill I started using a ceramic diffuser. But the preasure needed to push the CO2 through one of those is pretty high. A small piece of string solved that for me.
Naicha Report post Posted August 27, 2012 Got new apartment now and started to move.. Gotta try to plan how to move the bloody aquarium. But it will be a nice fresh start at least to get shit working the way i want them to. Luckily I have a 25 liter tank where teh fish could just stay for a day or two while i set things up.
Naicha Report post Posted September 1, 2012 Bought a 780 l/hr external filter today. gonna use after move. the tank is going to be standing quite low in the new apt so considering ditching the lid for it and having it open top with like 4 nano aquarium lights on the edges or something to get a bigger amount of light in total. Dunno, time will tell.
Naicha Report post Posted September 4, 2012 New setup after move.. Lots of plants died or were in bad shape. But I tried to keep it simple. The Triangle-design-thing. Anywho, I'll need a couple of rocks to put to the left aswell as lots of background fast growing plants. Any tips of plants in the background lyngs? Need some more foreground plants to the left also.. Maybe try to get a hold of more stauro. EDIT: Big bg plants will help cover the filter system abit aswell. Qwazin Report post Posted September 4, 2012 First rule when setting up an aquarium, never put fish in before all the air bubbles are gone about plants, Vallisneria is always good as background I think, and they can grow quite fast too.
Naicha Report post Posted September 4, 2012 Qwazin / Earendil Edain wrote on Tue, 04 September 2012 18:32First rule when setting up an aquarium, never put fish in before all the air bubbles are gone Yea. But before that they were all living in a 20 liter tank without pump / filter. And they had been living there for 3 days. I think they have a bigger chance of survival in this one. Have to get to the bloody store.. it looks silly empty atm.
Naicha Report post Posted September 4, 2012 http://uk.hagen.com/Aquatic/Filtration/External/A207 This is the one I bought. Only have 100~ liters but still bought one step bigger. Doesn't hurt.
