About the MMO guild Ginnunga

- Who we are
Ginnunga is an online gaming guild based in Europe which was formed in 1999 with focus on MMOs. We have a basic set of rules and morals that guides our behaviour, regardless of which game we play and our motto has always been that we should have fun together. This does however not mean that we are just a family guild. We play to win - not always to be the best, but we are quite aware of quality, not just in personality and behaviour, but also in game excellence. We are currently playing Guild Wars 2 on Blackgate and WoW on Nordrassil

Gamescom 2012 is currently underway! Calyn, Coots and Cogency had a chance to go and have a look on day one. Made a few pictures of the booths and stuff, I guess you all know what a computer looks like and the trailers of new games can be found on Youtube so not to many of those. But nonetheless, click the link below for some pictures!

We have come across a new MMO, ArcheAge Online, its currently still in developement and ofcourse its way to early to tell if this is the "new" best game ever. But from what we've seen, this has potential to be a great game.

It is currently in closed beta (without NDA) in Korea, supposed to release in November this year in Korea, and in Q1 in the west (but there is no publisher yet). They don't claim to "westernize" the game, it already seems to be less asian than Aion or TERA. It's using CryEngine 3. A few of the developers were involved in L2.

The game is supposed to have a PvE part comparable to WoW and PvP part comparable to L2, but what sets it apart from other MMOs are the sandbox features.

  • Classes: 4 Archetypes OR custom like in UO. You have 10 skillsets to choose from and can have 3 active at any given time.
  • The world is seamless and consists of 3 massive continents, one of them is supposed to allow players to build and siege their own castles, the other two are held by NPC factions. There are ships but no teleport.
  • Housing: Extensive housing system lets players plant down houses of different sizes in any free spot in the world similar to UO, and expand them with crafting items or NPCs. You will be able to build villages and one of the videos shows players building a shipyard and ships.
  • Labor Points: These are used in crafting or other activities and accumulate over time even while offline.
  • Factions: In addition to NPC factions, players can create their own. Attacking a member of your own faction on PvP servers will flag you as a criminal (or cause you to go to trial, unclear), you can go to jail in this game.
  • There is mounted combat - your mount can level up and gain new abilities - as well as naval battle which looks similar to Darkfall.

Today, myself, Ernesto, Coots and Raynolf battled against teh evil armies of the mad god on the Djinn server.

I reached level 20 without ever dying on any character and proceeded to level up my companions, who kept on dying.

We then formed a tactical blob formation and first battled the evil CUBE GOD.

Then I took command of the blob and directed it towards 120 other gods that we all killed.

Since my companions kept on dying even in the safety of the mighty blob, we took a quick detour so I could level them up again.

But alas, after we met up with the blob again and proceeded onwards towards the Mad God, we were caught in a Hinterhalt and we all died, myself standing heroicly until the last second. Or something like that.

When I died, I had fired 55430 shots with 15% accuracy, explored 329971 tiles, killed 2080 monsters, 121 gods, earned 268 boss fame, completed 3 dungeons, helped my lesser companions to achieve 298 level ups, and earned 429 total fame, to remain a legend forever.

With great sadness we received the news that wednesday the 16th of september Ethan, the son of Corwynn and Polluxia, passed away. The cause seemed to be a viral infection.

Corwynn and Polluxia fought side by side with us in WAR as part of the Renegade Legion guild. They are good people, and things like this should not happen to them. All words seem out of place when describing events like this.

Our hearts go out to Polluxia and Corwynn, who are dealing with this tragic loss. May Ethan rest in peace.

Our dear beloved friend Patrik "Ondskefull" Silverberg has passed away. We will all remember and cherish his memory. There just aren't any words in our human language that can properly describe what one feels at times like these. There is just a moist, damp sadness that descends upon oneself like a misty haze of despair.

Patrik, you will be missed.

11. Worlds has been damaged by the infringement by NCSoft and is suffering, and will continue to suffer, irreparable harm and damage as a result of this infringement, unless such infringement is enjoined by this Court.

The suffering! Oh the suffering! US patent system at it's best. 10 years after graphical MMOs were launched, some silly company gets patent rights on, you knew it - MMOs!

You might remember earlier in the month we reported on Worlds.com placing down patents on two technologies that we commonly use in the MMO industry -- scalable chat and system and method of enabling users of interacting in a virtual space -- and how much havoc this could play with our favorite games. We also made the assumption that lawyers were going to begin marching from Worlds.com with suits in hand, beginning their demands of money.

I found this very interesting piece on on Raph Kosters blog where the intro caught my eye quite quickly.

Dmitri Williams has released the first paper from an initiative that I helped get off the ground years ago, before leaving SOE. Basically, SOE gave him full (anonymized) logs of activity for EQ2.

Some key findings:
  1. The largest concentration of players are in their 30s
  2. There are more players in their 30s than in their 20s
  3. Older players also play more than younger players
  4. ....

You can find the whole paper at Terra Nova

As some on this list know, my research group has been working on a joint project with Sony Online Entertainment for the last two years. This collaboration has enabled our team to collect virtual world data on--as far as we know--an unprecedented scale. SOE has let us access the full data logs generated and collected by the world Everquest II.

This is one of those "be careful what you ask for" moments in science. We asked for everything, and many terabytes later, found ourselves hosting and analyzing massive data on supercomputers at NCSA. SOE also let us do a large-scale survey of their player base. Although there have been good surveys of virtual world populations done in the past, this is the first that took place within the game engine and with the help of the developer. As a result, it does not have the self-selection issues that the first such surveys have had, and the response rate was impressive.
